Bavarian Greens achieve best ever result in regional elections:
The Spokespersons of the European Green Party today congratulated the Bavarian Green Party for their historic showing in the Bavarian regional elections held on Sunday 28th September.
EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe Lamberts said: "The Bavarian Greens have had a great result in the elections to the Bavarian State Parliament. By obtaining 9.4 % of the vote (an increase of 1.7%), the Bavarian Greens have shown that there is a growing recognition in Bavaria that the Greens are the party with the most imaginative political programme and have also shown that the Greens are able to win the votes of electors who normally vote for conservative parties, in this case the CSU. The Greens ran a very good campaign and focussed on the need for reform of the education system and the need for much greater use of renewable sources of energy. "
EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek continued: "On behalf of the European Greens, I would like to congratulate the Bavarian Greens' lead candidate, Sepp Daxenberger, and the rest of his team on a very good result and for having waged such a positive and effective campaign. This is not only a very good result for the Greens but it is also an extremely bad result for the governing CSU party, who have lost their absolute majority for the first time in decades and whose vote has gone down by more than 17% to 43.8% . This is very good news for Bavarian Democracy and the Greens have played a key role in changing the political landscape of Bavaria. The Bavarian electorate have shown that there is a real desire for change and we hope that a new type of government coalition will now be possible, and that the Greens will be able to play a role in that coalition."
