European Greens call for respect for democratic process in Bolivia: EGP supports Bolivia’s government and condemns violent attempts to destabilise country
The European Green Party today expressed their support for the democratically elected government of Bolivia and urged all political parties in Bolivia to desist from inciting the violence which has resulted in at least 30 deaths in the past few days, mainly in the Pando region.
EGP Co-Spokesperson Ulrike Lunacek, who is also the Austrian Green Party's Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs said: "We European Greens have today issued a declaration of support for the democratic process in Bolivia at a time when certain forces seem intent on overthrowing the government of President Evo Morales by force, a government which was legitimately elected and whose mandate was reinforced by a referendum as recently as 10th August. We condemn in the strongest possible terms the violence which broke out over a week ago and which has caused the deaths of many, mainly indigenous, people. We would like to express our condolences to the families of the victims and back the calls for a speedy and comprehensive investigation into the violence so that all those responsible, either directly or indirectly, can be brought to justice."
EGP Co-Spokesperson Philippe Lamberts continued: "We very much hope that the negotiations between President Morales and opposition politicians which are currently taking place in Cochabamba succeed in defusing the current political crisis and ensure that the country is once again governed by democratic institutions and the rule of law, and is not thrown into further chaos by antidemocratic forces. We welcome the expressions of support for Bolivia's democratic institutions and government by the heads of state of UNASUR countries, the Andean Parliament and the current French Presidency of the European Union. We European Greens would like to reiterate our conviction that a peaceful, democratic, prosperous and sustainable future for Bolivia, as for any other country, can only be achieved if human rights are fully respected, including the rights of all minorities and disadvantaged groups, the country's wealth and resources are shared in a more equitable way and the country's constitutional and territorial integrity is respected."
