party profile

The Green idea started in Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) through a strong anti-nuclear movement end of eighties. It came as a reaction to the monstrous governmental plan to build 23 nuclear power reactors inside a beautiful area of national parks. That movement resulted in the creation of the Green Party in 1990 that participated in first "free" elections after the revolution 1945. Since 1994 every political organization that has Green in the name was controlled one way or another by regime. That time no Green voices could be heard against monstrous, inhuman, sick regime of Milosevic.

Exactly that was the reason for the local enthusiastic group of Greens from the town Topola in central Serbia, inspired by Dragan Djekic (member of Sweden Greens, originally from Serbia), to organise them selves in the Green Ecological Party end of 1996. The first office was in a garage in town Topola, without heating during the winter time and with difficult e-mail connection which took time and nerves.

Among the priorities of the Green Ecological Party was Green political work on spreading Green ideas into Serbian political scene and unifying Greens in one Green organization. A variety of problems followed those efforts; lack of members, money, communication techniques, social, economic and even personal security of members.

Soon after, understanding complicated political position for Green Ecological Party in dictatorial Serbia, Green Forum Foundation Sweden become main supporter to variety of Green cooperation projects that followed: "Democracy and Agenda 21" (year 1997 main topics-no Democracy, no ecology), "Green Balkan Network" (year 1998, re-building broken bridges among the citizens of ex-YU and Balkan), Green Platform of SEE (Green ecological priorities in South Eastern Europe region). Soon after "Green Balkan Network" cooperation project, Greek Greens organized beginning of May 1999 a meeting of Balkan Greens in Athens during the NATO war against Yugoslavia. Balkan Greens than anonymously stressed urgent need for stopping the war, peace prevention in the future, Human Rights for all etc.

"Green Platform of SEE" project gathered Greens from Serbia, ex Yugoslavia and South Eastern Europe in Topola in spring 2000, to create a document (available also in English) stressing Green political priorities in region of South Eastern Europe towards peace prevention, national-religion-race tolerance, Democracy, Human Rights and sustainable development. One of the results of that work was the creation of Green Union, (group of Green parties), that lived shortly because of an internal political pro-regime sabotage. In spite of that rest of Green Union succeeded to support Democratic Opposition of Serbia during the electoral campaign 2000, asking for membership to DOS. But membership application to DOS was twice rejected mostly thanks to a veto of Zarko Korac, leader of Social Democratic Union.

The Green Union tried to participate in all level elections in Serbia in year 2000 but succeeded only partially, on local and regional level but due to an unfortunate majority electoral system stayed without elected representatives. By the beginning of year 2001 Green Union fell apart because of above mentioned sabotage activities of so called "greens" from inside. Still, the majority of people from green parties previously creating Green Union wanted to continue working together.

In the early autumn of 2001 The GREENS were born as a final result of Serbian Greens unification process. The Greens started its formal legal life September the 14th 2001 as one, finally unified, the party of the greens gathering ex-members of Green Union parties driven by the wish to politically work together and keep Green principles of democracy, democratic way of work, solidarity, sustainable development and cooperation as grassroots for all their actions. During the Council meeting of European Greens (EFGP) in Budapest (1-2 of December) The GREENS became Observers in the EFGP with an ambition to become full member one day.

The First Congress of The Greens took place in October 2002 in Belgrade and gathered 70 delegates from 12 cities from all over Serbia. In presence of Green friends from Swedish Greens, European Federation of Green Parties, Greens from Greece and from Bosnia as guests, delegates elected new board, party program, statues and election manifesto of the Greens. This congress not only gave fresh background for Greens but was highly motivating for many of the Greens not previously actively engaged in our work.  Second congress took place in October 2005 in Belgrade.

The national board of The Greens (2005-2007) consists of 7 members including spokespersons. Proudly both, The Greens and The Young Greens, have presently male-female spokesperson representative system.

YOUNG GREENS, full members of Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) since 2000, work since September 2000 within the Greens, discussing youth issues and organizing seminars and training for young greens. Young Greens successfully hosted International Summer Camp in Serbia during summer 2001 with more than 100 participants from all over the world, international seminar "Sustainable Development in Eastern Europe" 2002, within a frame of preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development and number of other events that followed. Serbian Young Greens are one of the funding members of Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe.

Prior aim of the GREENS is to promote green values in our work with constant activities close to the people in Serbia, active public debates and participation in local and national elections, believing that only parliamentary presence of GREENS in Serbia can significantly influent the presently careless attitude of the Serbian government towards hot environmental issues and sustainable future. For achieving such aims GREENS are working hard and preparing with support from the European Greens.

Besides the political priorities we already stressed Greens want to see Serbia grow closer to the European Union, as a main result of European cooperation in the last decade. After all wars and isolation last decade we want to see Serbia as a significant part of Europe, not only geographical. GREENS of Serbia therefore feel additional responsibility to be a certain sustainable link between Serbia nowhere towards Serbia in Europe, in the end. At last, after all…
