The Green party of Georgia was established in 1991 and its first elected chairman was Mr.Z.Zhvania. Currently the Green party of Georgia unifies 45 regional organizations all over the country as well as 3000 members. The Green party of Georgia is a member of the European Federation of Greens Parties. In May 1995 Dr, Mr. G. Gachechiladze was elected as a new chairman of the party by the Congress of the Greens of Georgia.
The Green Party of Georgia has become a force to be reckoned with within the Georgian political spectrum. Since 1989, when the process of democratization was initiated, the Green Party has played an active role in the political life of the newly independent country of Georgia, eventually becoming a party with its own stance on all vital problems of Georgian society and the turbulent region of Caucasus. Despite political and economic hardship, the Greens Party has maintained its authority in society, facilitating the dissemination of Green ideas and thus capturing the attention of a considerable part of the population of Georgia.
The Greens Party has a deputy-minister at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection. The Greens Party of Georgia makes its political focus on the values of social justice and the sustainable development. Despite 70 years of Communist regime, thorough negligence of the environmental problems by the Soviet governance and hence the absence of an environmentalist mentality in Georgia, the Greens Party has succeeded in putting environmental issues and problems as well as growing social injustice at the forefront of discussions both to the government and to the public.
The Greens Party is denied the possibility of publication its own newsletter due to lack of appropriate funding sources, but nevertheless tries to disseminate its views via the Georgian mass media. Despite the creation of an alliance with the ruling party of the Citizens' Union of Georgia, the Greens Party has never ceased its vigorous insistence on environmental issues and actively criticizes governmental actions, which seem inconsistent with the principles it advocates. The Greens Party of Georgia advocates a peaceful foreign policy and fully supports the "Peaceful Caucasus".
Despite having only three representatives in the Parliament (1995-1999), the Greens Party of Georgia has been able to create a new environmental legislation and make amendments in the Constitution of Georgia.
For Instance, Article 37 in the Georgian Constitution stipulates guaranteed right to each citizen to live in a healthy environment . The state is obliged to guarantee the protection of nature, taking into account the needs of future generations. Individuals also have the right to complete, objective and timely information on their working and living environment. This is the first time when ecological priorities are established in a State Constitution. Because of the huge efforts of the Greens party 13 other important environmental laws have been accepted by the Parliament, among which are the new principles of nuclear and radioactive security for Georgia which prohibit transportation of nuclear waste and the construction of atomic power stations. Also according to the new environmental legislation the import and distribution of American Genetically modified potato seeds has also been prohibited.
The Greens Party of Georgia stands for the peaceful resolution of all ethnic and religious conflicts in Georgia and in the whole region of Caucasus. The Greens Party tries to actively communicate and co-operate with environmental and social, political and non-governmental organizations in all neighbouring countries and autonomies, as well as co-operating with similar groups on the larger level of the Black Sea Economic Co-operation and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The Greens Party has taken part in the elections of 2nd of November 2003 in an alliance with the block "For a New Georgia". In the alliance there were united nine parties. The block received 22.3 %. However, due to the 'rose revolution' held in Georgia the result of the elections was annulled.
