Having started in December 2002 and still looking forward to their Founding Congress, OIKOLOGOI PRASINOI (Ecologists Greens, or just Eco-Greens) is a really young party.
Their creation process has built on a two years' political dialogue coordinated by the Ecological Forum, a network of local groups and individual green activists that also included PRASINI POLITIKI (GREEN POLITICS), the previous greek member of the E.F.G.P. All members of PRASINI POLITIKI are now active in OIKOLOGOI PRASINOI, which is now carrying on both the work and the EFGP membership of the previous scheme. A National Council of 18 members has been elected to coordinate the first steps.
The Founding Declaration of OIKOLOGOI PRASINOI defines their approach to ecology as: creative, radical, politically independent, tolerant, internationalist and pacifist, movement-orientated, community-based, participatory, feminist, solidary, anti-consumerist, antiauthoritarian and alternative.
OIKOLOGOI PRASINOI have now launched their first campaigns and have participated in the 2004 European Election, obtaining over 40.000 votes.
OIKOLOGOI PRASINOI participated in the local elections in 2006 in coalitions with other parties. They suppoted autonomous green lists fot the City Council of Athens and the Prefecture Council of Thessaloniki (second biggest vity after Athens). These lists got 1,4% for the City Council of Athens and 4,6% for the Prececture Council of Thessaloniki (4,1% in prevous elections in coalition with left wing parties - this time the left wing parties supported other candidates, but we got more votes!). Two Green Prefecture Councillors were elected in Thessaloniki (we had 1 in previous elections): Michalis Tremopoulos (re-elected) anf Dimitra Gogakou (new).
In the 16th September 2007 national elections OIKOLOGOI PRASINOI participated autonomously with green lists al over Greece, getting 1,05% and 70.000 votes.
